Dec 15, 2005, 19:12 GMT http://news.monstersandcritics.com/northamerica/article_1069322.php/New_penny_salutes_Lincoln%60s_200th_birthday WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- Congress has approved a redesign of the penny to celebrate Abraham Lincoln`s 200th birthday in 2009. The new penny will feature four new designs on the back of the current coin, each representing a different phase of the 16th U.S. president`s life, Copley News Service said. The designs will depict Lincoln`s birth and childhood in Kentucky, his youth in Indiana, his professional life in Illinois and his presidency in Washington. The present image of Lincoln will remain on the front of the coin. The treasury secretary will choose the four designs after consulting with the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, the Commission of Fine Arts and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. After 2009, the reverse of the penny will be permanently changed to one representing Lincoln`s role in preserving the nation during the Civil War. |

Re: a redesign of the penny
This may be a dumb question but, wouldn't it cost more than a penny to create a penny?

Anyone has the answer? |
Re: a redesign of the penny
I guess we could make the penny out of zinc coated lead which would drop its costs down. There might be an environmental downside though.
Its getting tough to make a coin that's worth less then a cent. |
Re: a redesign of the penny
Scenes from the 16th president's life?
Anything from Ford's Theater? :D "Other that that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?" |
